covestro’s success story as an independent company promised and delivered, with three key cornerstones centering on: strong financial results, local innovation to the world and ambitious sustainability targets. 

2015

covestro invests eur 3 billion in china, and the covestro integrated site becomes the company's largest production base worldwide. covestro's shanghai research and development center becomes one of the company's three major research and development centers around the world.

2014

bayer materialscience announces the expansion of hdi production systems, and begins construction of systems at integrated site shanghai for annual hdi production capacity of 50,000 tons.

2013

the shanghai prdc builds an innovation hub for the asia-pacific region.

2011

the company launches a series of initiatives to deepen business development in china:

  • announces the launch of phase iii expansion works on the shanghai prdc
  • global headquarters of polycarbonate operations is relocated to shanghai
  • asia-pacific regional headquarters for the coatings, adhesives and specialties business is moved to shanghai
  • the fully upgraded tdi production system at integrated site shanghai formally enters production, with a planned capacity as high as 250,000 tons a year
2010

additional investments of around eur 1 billion are made for integrated site shanghai to greatly expand production capacity in china by 2016 for high-grade materials.

2008

shanghai integrated site announces a series of production plans, including:

  • groundbreaking and operational launch of a 250,000 ton plant for tdi (toluene diisocyanate)
  • launch of a single-line production system for mdi (350,000 tons)
  • launch of aqueous polyurethane dispersion facilities for waterborne coating materials (20,000 tons)
  • launch of a second polycarbonate production system, with output of 100,000 tons a year.
2006

phase ii expansion of shanghai prdc facilities. four core bayer materialscience units to carry out technological development and research under one roof.
integrated site shanghai announces the launch of three major production project facilities:

  • polycarbonate plant with annual output of 100,000 tons (makrolon®)
  • facilities for producing polyurethane raw material monomer and mdi polymers from mdi (diphenylmethane diisocyanate) base materials, with annual output of 80,000 tons
  • a production plant for hdi  (hexamethylene diisocyanate), a raw material for coatings, with an annual output of 30,000 tons.
2001

ground is broken and work begins at integrated site shanghai—the forerunner of the covestro integrated site.
bayer shanghai polymer research & development center (prdc), the forerunner of the covestro polymer research & development center, launches operations.

19th to 20th century

bayer enters the chinese market to develop its dyestuff business. over the 20th century and beyond, it keeps a firm focus on the greater china area.
